Sewing for Every Body with Ms Jackie - The Scout Tee

Hello Lovelies, It’s Ms. Jackie. You may have seen me teaching or shopping at Needles and Bolts. You may even have taken a class or two with me. Have you been wondering how we decide what garment classes to teach? Well, it starts with a sample, usually in the teacher’s size. Lately, I’ve been thinking it would be nice if we could make things in a variety of sizes and work out some fit issues on a body other than my own. So, I asked our lovely boss Stella to help me out. And here we are with the first in an occasional series I’m calling Sewing for Every Body. I decided to start with the Scout Tee, a piece from our popular capsule wardrobe series. I learned quite a few things in the making of this piece for another body. Stella was not a fan of the fit of the Scout on her, so I switched to one of my tried-and-true patterns, the Cashmerette Montrose. Since Stella and I have similar measurements, I started with a size close to my own. Then the fun began. We hacked the pattern to accommodate Stella’s need for a top that lets her move. She did not like the gathered yoke, so we changed it to a box pleat, and it was hit. Doesn’t she look great? Stella’s favorite version is this white handkerchief linen number. We were so happy with it that we decided to make the Montrose an alternative in the capsule wardrobe class. I plan to make a few of these for myself using some of the beautiful handkerchief linen from the shop. Next on the cutting table is an adorable pair of Ophelia overalls from Decades of Style. Keep an eye out for the class on those in the future. And stay tuned for Beth’s make for Stella: The Pietra pants. See you at the shop! Ms. Jackie
